What I do
What is Interventional Radiology (IR) ?
Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical sub-specialty of radiology utilizing minimally-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system.
The concept behind interventional radiology (IR) is to diagnose and treat patients using the least invasive techniques currently available in order to minimize risk to the patient and improve health outcomes.
Interventional radiology (IR) is one of the biggest advances in medical practice, offering treatments with less risk, less pain, less recovery time and ultimately less hospital stay in comparison to open surgery.
Through a tiny incision in your skin, interventional radiologists deliver precise, targeted treatment to complex and sometimes life-threatening diseases and conditions. IR treatments are a well-accepted choice for conditions such as stroke, cancer, uterine fibroids, varicose veins, angioembolisation for bleeding and many other common and serious medical issues.
The range of diseases and organs amenable to image-guided therapeutic and diagnostic procedures are extensive and constantly evolving, and include, but are not limited to, diseases and elements of the vascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and, the central nervous system.
IR is particularly relevant for patients who are in frail health or who have already undergone numerous surgeries.
As part of IR practice, Interventional radiologists often work as part of a collaborative team—partnering with your primary care physician or referring specialist to provide you with total care.
IR procedures have become an integral part of medical care.
