What is Interventional Radiology (IR)?

Intervention Radiology A New Ideology

What is Interventional Radiology (IR) ?

Interventional Radiology is a subspecialty of radiology that uses minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases across almost every organ system.

The core principle of IR is to use the least invasive technique to achieve the best outcome—leading to lower risk, less pain, shorter recovery, and reduced hospital stay when compared to open surgery.

Through a tiny skin puncture, interventional radiologists use fine needles, wires, and catheters to deliver highly targeted treatments under real-time guidance (fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, or ultrasound).

Common indications include stroke care, cancer interventions (biopsy, ablation, TACE), uterine fibroid embolization, varicose vein therapy, angioplasty and stenting, biliary and urinary drainage (PCN), and bleeding control with angio-embolization.

IR benefits patients who are frail or have had multiple surgeries by minimizing physiological stress while providing effective, organ-sparing therapies.

Interventional radiologists work in close collaboration with referring physicians and specialists to integrate these procedures seamlessly into comprehensive patient care.

In essence: a needle or fine catheter… imaging to see inside… highly selective, targeted treatment.

12+ Years of Experience
in Radio-diagnosis & Imaging

I completed my MBBS from the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune from 2002 to 2007, followed by a one-year internship at the same institution. Thereafter, I served as a Medical Officer in the Indian Armed Forces from 2007 to 2014, gaining invaluable experience across diverse clinical and operational settings.

I pursued my M.D. in Radio-diagnosis from PGIMER, Chandigarh, one of India’s top medical institutes. My training included three years as a junior resident and three years as a senior resident in the Department of Radio-diagnosis and Imaging at PGIMER, Chandigarh and Dr. RMLIMS, Lucknow.

Over the years, I have worked across leading institutions including Kalyan Singh Cancer Institute, Sahara India Medical Institute and currently serve as a Senior Consultant in the Department of Radiodiagnosis at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow.

With more than 12 years of cumulative experience in radiology, I specialize in advanced imaging, image-guided procedures, and precision diagnostics—delivering accurate, safe, and patient-centric care.
